The ‘megaship’ Ever Given blocking Suez canal partially refloated

Egypt’s Suez Canal, one of the world’s busiest trade routes, has become blocked after one of the largest container ships in the world became wedged across it – causing a huge jam with dozens of ships being stuck now.

The Ever Given, a 220,000-ton, Taiwan-owned ‘megaship’, had lost the ability to steer due to high winds and sand storms and became lodged in the sand of the eastern bank of the Egyptian canal on Tuesday morning.

The Suez canal is one of the most important waterways in the world and links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea and shipping lanes to Asia and can handle dozens of giant container ships a day. The good news is the giant container ship that has been blocking the Suez Canal for more than a day has been partially refloated and traffic along the fastest shipping route from Europe to Asia is expected to resume soon.
