Riege Software and CarbonCare win Lufthansa Cargo Sustainability Prize
The first IATA ONE Record Hackathon in 2023 was hosted by Lufthansa Cargo in Seeheim. From June 23 to 25, developers from all over the world developed and presented solutions for process optimization in the distribution of air cargo as part of the competition. This year, Riege Software and the Swiss company CarbonCare jointly presented their idea of CO₂-enriched ONE Record data in the early booking process of a shipment. |
Riege Software has been a member and active supporter of the ONE Record working group and hackathons since the beginning. This year, six ONE Record and API experts from the two companies contested together as “The Carbon Avengers” with 20 other teams at the ONE Record Hackathon in Seeheim. Lufthansa Cargo Sustainability Prize The team members Martin Skopp, Kevin Schmengler, Nele Paulsen, Nico K. Pereira da Silva, Enrico Cinardo and Annika Wiedel were able to convince the judges with their solution on increased visibility of CO₂ emissions in the early booking process and won the Lufthansa Cargo Sustainability Prize. Their idea was to build a reliable engine providing value-add in airline bookings, thus being a collaborative component which can be used and integrated by various parties such as airlines and freight forwarders into their existing infrastructure. “Our goal was to make CO₂ emissions visible as early as in the booking process of air freight shipments, and to enable the logistics industry tomap and reduce CO₂ emissions by enriching the ONE Record data format. The idea was to develop a backend component that adds emission values from the calculator built by CarbonCare to the BookingOptions offered as part of the IATA Modernize Cargo Distribution initiative,” commented Martin Skopp, Produktmanager Airline-Messaging at Riege Software and team lead of the “Carbon Avengers”. “Sustainability in airfreight is a strategic field for Lufthansa Cargo. In only 28 hours, the Riege team created a solution at the IATA ONE Record Hackathon that makes alternative sustainable airfreight offers comparable, using the new IATA ONE Record data standard. Truly impressive and a worthy winner of the Lufthansa Cargo Award for Sustainability.” said Jan-Wilhelm Breithaupt, Vice President Global Fulfillment Management, Lufthansa Cargo. Riege Software Developer Prize The Riege Software Prize for exceptional coding skills and the presentation of an innovative solution with the best use of technology, enabling true collaboration within the global logistics community was issued by Benjamin Riege, Creative Director and co-owner of Riege Software to the Air France/KLM Cargo Team “Switcargo” for their multichannel platform, allowing an exchange of shipment data between parties with differentiating data models. “The AirFrance/KLM team has created a great tool with ‘Switcargo’, which eases the transition to ONE Record and thus makes the set goal of achieving a uniform data standard by January 1, 2026 possible. Simplifying data exchange between all stakeholders is the key to success for the entire logistics community.” – Benjamin Riege, Creative Director and co-owner, Riege Software |
